Pink bow tattoos on the backs of the thighs

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A woman stands with her back to the camera, wearing zebra print shorts with a pink waistband and glitter heels. Two pink bows with ribbons that wrap down the leg sit on the back of each thigh, drawn with dark outlines and soft shading. The tattoos are mainly pink against light skin, set on a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Dunn wanted her bows finished by Friday, so I sat up with the spool until the gas ran low. Pink satin, double-faced, the sort we only ever ran for the Blackpool dance halls. Ruth had sent the pattern on a sheet of brown paper with a note in pencil: crossed twice, tied at the back, ends left long enough to catch the light when she walks.

I should say I was no great seamstress then. My hands shook on the tension wheel, and twice I ran the satin through backwards, which is how the floor foreman learned I had a knack for knots. Mr Ferriby ran the sheds like a parade ground, but he let me keep the wheel after dark on condition I swept the lint. Lint was in my hair for a month.

Ruth came for the ribbons on the Saturday, with her sister in tow and a suitcase that wouldn't shut. She didn't want them wrapped. She wanted to see them tied straight onto her paper, loops pulled tight, ends left to fall. I did it on the counter while the kettle boiled, and when I finished she laughed, a short surprised laugh, and said they looked as if they could walk out of the shop by themselves.

They did, in a way. She sent a postcard from Dover in April with a single pink loop stitched to the corner, no message, just a stamp and the word Calais crossed out. I kept it in the drawer with the spare spools. Some mornings I still picture her on a ferry somewhere, the satin ends trailing behind her down the gangway, catching every bit of grey light there was.
