Black and grey tattoo of thigh and calf muscle anatomy in fine hatched linework, running down the outside of a woman's leg.

Muscle anatomy tattoo down a thigh and leg

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo depicts layered muscle fibres and the outline of a knee and lower leg, drawn in fine hatched and stippled black linework. Shading is built up with directional strokes that give the muscles a sculpted, anatomical look. The design runs from the upper thigh down past the knee on a leg wearing green shorts, set against a railing and pale stone background.

The plates had to be finished before the examiners came up from London, and the last one was the thigh. Mr Hallam had pinned the fresh sheet to the board in the back room of the Infirmary, weighted at each corner with a brass specimen tray, and told you to stop looking at the ceiling and start counting fibres. Nobody in Carrowby had ever asked a girl from the street behind the bakery to draw the insides of people, but the war had taken the men who used to do it, and you had steady hands and no fear of blood.

You worked in the mornings, before the ward filled. Pencil first, then the fine nib in Indian ink, each fibre laid down with a stroke that had to lean the same way as the one beside it, or the muscle would look like wet rope rather than something that could lift a sack of coal. Hallam said the trick was to draw the pull, not the shape. Where the quadriceps gathered above the kneecap you pressed harder, and where the tissue thinned toward the joint you let the hatching breathe, so the eye could find the bone underneath.

On the last Thursday the rain came sideways off the moor and the lamp failed twice. You finished the knee at half past five by the grey light from the window, your fingers stiff with cold. When Hallam came in he studied it for a long time, then took out his spectacles, tilted the sheet toward the glass, and said nothing at all. He signed the plate with your initials beside his own, which was not allowed, and you walked home past the railway bridge feeling the drawn leg shift under your own skin with every step.
