Outside, the snow had buried the milestone and the gatepost up to the second rail. Tom Greaves, who kept the Hollin Gate Inn with the patience of a man who had no other choice, came in stamping his boots and said the Carlisle coach would not be through before Thursday. The four stranded passengers took their supper in the low room and argued over cards. The parcel, addressed to a Miss Ada Rawlinson at the mill house across the beck, sat between the salt cellar and the bread, and nobody moved it.

On the third night the wind dropped all at once, the way it does on the fells, and the silence woke Edith. She went down with a lamp and found the parcel had been shifted to the window ledge, its ribbon retied into a bow twice the size of the first. Tucked under the lace was a note in a careful, unfamiliar hand: Keep it until the road is open. I will come for it myself.

In the morning she carried it out onto the fresh white road, the bow bright as a pair of pink wings against the snow, and set off across the beck to see whether Ada Rawlinson was still waiting.
