Three pixel hearts on the back of the neck

Neck · Colour · Photo

Three small hearts sit in a row on the back of a person's neck, each built from square pixels in the manner of retro video game graphics. The hearts are filled with red ink and outlined in black, with the largest in the centre and the two outer hearts slightly smaller. The soft, neutral background and white lace collar keep the focus on the tattoo.

You learn the rule of the cabinet on the quay at Skerrow, where the amusements have been bolted to the harbour wall since before the war. Three hearts sit in the corner of the screen, and when the last one goes the little knight lies down and the machine swallows your coin. Your father's boat, the Marigold Rose, is out past the breakwater with the nets down, and you are nine and have been told to wait by the bait shed. So you wait by the cabinet instead, feeding it the pennies you found in the scuppers.

Your father comes back at dusk with the hold half full and finds you with your forehead pressed to the glass. He does not shout. He sits on an upturned crate, takes the joystick from your hand, and says the hearts are not really lives. They are just how the game keeps count of how brave you were being. Then he loses his first life to a green slime that bounces at the wrong moment, and laughs so hard he has to wipe his eyes with a sleeve that smells of brine and diesel.

The next morning the sea is grey and the fleet is slow to leave. You stand on the wall and count the boats out one by one, the way the cabinet counts hearts. Three, then two, then the Marigold Rose last, her engine coughing like an old dog. Your mother says the weather is turning. Your father raises a hand from the wheelhouse, and you raise yours, and behind you the machine plays its tinny tune for a stranger who has somehow kept the knight alive.

By afternoon the wind has swung north-east and the harbour radio is full of warnings. You go back to the cabinet and find the three hearts unchanged, bright red and square against the dark screen, and you spend your last penny on one more go. The knight walks out into the pixel rain. The Marigold Rose comes in at the top of the tide with a torn sail and a full hold, and you do not look up from the screen until her engine is loud enough to shake the glass.
