Small fingerprint heart on the collarbone
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is filled with concentric fingerprint-like ridges in black ink. The tattoo sits on pale skin just below the collarbone, with the rest of the shoulder and a patterned top visible at the edges. The linework is fine and the tattoo is shown in greyscale, with a soft, shallow focus across the skin.

The ink pad is still tacky from yesterday's register, and somebody has left its lid off on the chandlery counter. You press your thumb into it while the kettle goes, then again on the back of the crew list, because the harbourmaster wants every hand on the Morwenna accounted for before she clears the bar at six. The first print smudges at the centre. You wipe it on your apron and try again, and this time the ridges lie clean, curling in from the edge like grain in a pine plank.

Outside, the fleet is loading. Tom Rowe is dragging a tub of ice down the slipway and swearing at a gull that has taken his pasty. Nobody on the quay looks twice at the paper on your desk. But you know what it is for. If the boat goes over off the Lizard, someone will have to match a drowned man to a name, and a thumbprint is the only thing a fisherman carries ashore that the sea cannot argue with.
So you fold the sheet into your coat and walk it down yourself. Captain Ailsa Trewin reads the names aloud with her unlit pipe in the corner of her mouth, lingering on each one as though she is counting boots on the deck. When she reaches your line she stops, takes the pen from behind your ear without asking, and draws a small heart in the margin, circling your print so that its whorl sits at the centre of the shape.
"Lucky charm," she says. "Don't tell the insurers."
The Morwenna slips out past the breakwater on the ebb. You stay on the wall until her stern light is a pin, then walk back to the counter. The heart is still there on the form, drying in the damp air, and the ink on your thumb will take a day to wash off.
