Sunflower tattoo on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A single sunflower sits on the upper shoulder, drawn with fine outlines and soft grey shading across the petals and the textured centre. The bloom is shown at an angle, with petals of varying lengths fanning out around the head. The photograph is taken close up from the side, with the neck, ear and a pale wall in the background, and the tattoo is the clear focal point.

The seed tin had come aboard at Hull wrapped in oilcloth, and by the fortieth day out of the Horn it had become Tobias Renn's private problem. The bosun wanted it stowed below with the lamp oil. The captain had said only that Mrs Sallow in Valparaíso had paid in advance and wanted the thing alive when it reached her. Nobody aboard knew what a sunflower wanted from a sea passage, so Tobias kept the tin under his bunk and checked it every watch, the way he would check a sprung plank.

The seedlings came up pale in the damp, and he rigged a shelf by the galley porthole where the lamplight fell. Ada the cook grumbled that the shoots were stealing her warmth, but Tobias noticed that each morning the young heads had leaned a little further toward the glass, as if the ship were a field and the sun a thing that could be followed. When the swell came up off the Falklands and the lamp swung wild, the shoots bent with it and righted themselves, stubborn as rope.
In the worst of the blow a wave came over the rail and took the shelf clean away. Tobias went after it on his belly across the wet deck, one hand locked to a stanchion, and found the tin wedged against the coaming with its lid split open. Three shoots had survived. He carried them below inside his shirt and sat with them until dawn, cupping his palms around the pots like a man keeping a candle lit in a draught.
They raised Valparaíso on a bright morning, the hills stacked with painted houses. Mrs Sallow was waiting on the quay in a black dress, and when Tobias unwrapped the cloth she did not look at the plants at first. She looked out past the harbour wall, where the sun had come up over the water, and her face softened. The three young heads had already turned toward the light, and Tobias found that he had turned with them.
