Pink cherry blossom on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two open five-petalled cherry blossom flowers and two closed buds, with fine dark dots marking the stamens. The petals use soft pink and deep magenta shading, with lighter edges that give them depth. The motif is grouped loosely on the forearm, with one bud and a single loose petal set apart from the flowers on the left.

Gemma had wanted to pick a whole branch for her mum's birthday. Margaret had talked her out of it, so they gathered the fallen petals instead, sixty-odd of them, sealed in a sandwich bag with the atlas.

Margaret opened her handbag and took out a small brown envelope. Inside were two petals, brittle as tissue paper, faded from pink to the colour of weak tea. "I found them in the atlas when we moved house," she said. Gemma took the envelope without speaking, and for a moment neither of them looked at the room full of people trying to remember each other's names.
