Pink dinosaur tattoo with scattered birds on torso

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A dinosaur, shown in a dark silhouette with pink highlights along its back, tail and legs, is tattooed on the side of the torso near the navel. Small dark birds are scattered above and to the right of the animal. The shading is soft and the outline is gently blended into the skin, with the pink ink as the main colour against black and grey.

The lodger in room six leaves his notebook on the hall table most mornings, and most mornings you are the one who finds it, because at Mrs Pilling's boarding house on the Saltcote front you are the first up and the last to bed, and nothing gets lost in the place without you noticing. It is the Tuesday before the end of September. The sea has been creeping further up the shingle all week, and there is a crack in the back wall you could fit two fingers into.

You open the book on the hall runner, meaning only to check whether it is the one with the train times. It is not. Every page is a creature with a long curved head and a crest like a bent horn, drawn in soft grey pencil, and along the spine and down the tail of each one he has rubbed a stripe of pink chalk, as if the sun had only caught those parts. Beside the last drawing he has written in tidy capitals: NOT A FLOWER, NOT A CLOUD, JUST BONES. Small birds are sketched over the top of it, a scatter of V shapes lifting away from the page.

At breakfast he tells Mrs Pilling that the cliff at Dunmere Point is losing a yard a month and that the thing he has been looking for is still inside it. You ask if he will take you. He says you would need boots that were not your mother's. You say you have your own. He looks at you for a long moment, then tears out the page with the bent-horned creature and folds it into your palm, pink side out. Bring it to the point at low water, he says, hold it up to the rock, and see what looks back.

On the Thursday you walk out along the wet ledge with the paper buttoned inside your coat. The cliff face holds a dark shape, all ridge and hollow, and when you lift the page the pink chalk catches the light like a struck match. Starlings rise off the cliff top in one long ripple, and for a moment the stone and the paper look like the same animal. Then the tide turns, and you go back the way you came, the page held flat against your chest.
