Pink floral drips down both lower legs
Calf · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows two bare lower legs, viewed from the front, each with a tattoo of an abstract pink and red flower bloom near the knee. Dark, thin drip-like lines run down from each bloom towards the ankles, with small splatters of red and pink along the way. The soft, blended colour sits against a dark green background, and the image is cropped at the thighs and feet.

Mind the tea, it's still hot, and don't you dare drop it on the chart. Right. Sit down, the corridor lights will keep till morning. My mother told this one, and her mother told it to her, so three women have watered it down before me and I'll likely make it worse.

There was a painter in Whitby called Ada Penhallow who could never keep a colour where she put it. Watercolour, you understand. She'd lay a poppy on the paper wet as a kiss, and the paint would decide for itself where it went. The harbour men said her flowers ran. They weren't wrong. One April a squall came off the North Sea and drove straight through her open window, and by morning the whole sheet had slid down the paper in long dark threads, pink petals bleeding into soot-black lines that pooled at the foot like rain in a gutter.
She could have torn it up. Instead she pinned it to the wall of the lifeboat shed, and the crew came in to swear at it, and stayed to drink with it. Old Tom Reckitt said the streaks looked like the road home, the way headlamps smear on wet tarmac. Ada laughed and said the flowers were only what the rain had left behind.
So that's the story. You want to know if it's true? Nobody's ever found the sheet. Now go and check bed four before he wakes and rings for a bedpan.
