Cherry blossom branch down a thigh
Japanese · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A cherry blossom branch runs from the upper outer thigh down the side of the leg towards the knee. Grey-black shaded branches and twigs carry clusters of pink blossoms, with smooth gradients on the wood and flat pink petals. The tattoo is shown in colour against pale skin, with a white skirt and a hand at the top of the frame and a dark plastic sheet behind.

The frost had taken the plums at Hadley Lane but left the old Morello cherry standing, and Ruth Tillotson was halfway up its ladder with a pruning saw when the post van pulled in early. She didn't come down. The driver, a lad called Dev who had never once waited for a signature, shouted that there was a parcel too long for the letterbox and she would have to sign for it herself.

It was a flat box, the kind used for picture frames. Inside, wrapped in brown paper and a scrap of her late husband's oilcloth, lay a single branch, grey as slate, its blossom still shut tight in the bud. There was no note, only a Dover postmark and a smell of diesel and salt. Ruth knew that branch. She had cut it herself twenty years earlier, the morning Alan went off on the Margate boat for the last time, and she had given the cutting to the wind, because her mother said a cut branch should never be kept in a house where a man was not coming home.
She carried the box into the kitchen and set it on the table beside the kettle. By the time the water boiled, the flowers had opened one by one, pale pink in the warm room, as if they had been waiting for the right kind of light. She sat down and let her tea go cold.
Later she wrote a reply on the back of the postmark, in the same careless capitals Alan had always used, and tied it to the next branch she cut: We had frost. The plums are gone. The cherry held. Come and see before it drops.
