Pink flowers and fern on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows large pink blooms with soft shading, a small unopened bud, and dark green leaves with a feathery fern. The linework is fine and dark, with greys used for depth on the leaves and petals. The design wraps over the shoulder and down the upper arm, and the two photographs show the same piece from different angles against a plain background.

Dear Tomasz,

The big top came down in Carlisle on Tuesday, and the canvas went into the lorry in pieces, but Mrs Okafor kept the silk peonies. You remember them: forty pink blooms the wardrobe room stitched for the aerial ballet back in '88, with dark green fern pinned behind so the spotlights caught the leaves. The new owner wanted them burned. I told her I would sooner sell my own boots. So they sit in a crate under my bunk, folded in tissue, and every night I lift the lid and count them like sheep.
Ring Master Halloran says we open again in March on the seafront at Scarborough, if the council takes our pitch fee. He says it the way he has said everything since the elephants went to a sanctuary in Wales. The flyers have gone to a hotel kitchen in Harrogate. Only the four of us are left, plus the clown, who is drinking again and sleeps in the costume van with the door propped open for the air.
Yesterday a girl of about nine came to the fence holding her grandfather's hand and asked whether the flowers were real. I said no. Then I went back inside, climbed the rigging ladder with my bad knee, and pinned one bloom above the trapeze bar where the light still falls the way it did for the old flyers. It is a foolish thing to do with a dead act. But the girl's face when she spotted it lit up like the ring on opening night, and I thought, well, that is worth one bloom of silk.
Come up in March if you can. Bring the glue gun. We will need a great many more petals than we have.
Love, Dilys
