The magnolia came through the winter after all. Mr Haddow from the chapel fund brought the cutting up from Newcastle in a tin bucket wrapped in wet sacking, and he would not take a penny for it, only said it had to go by the back wall where the coal dust settles least. I have put it there. Every morning before the shift whistle I go out to see if the buds have swollen, and every morning Dad grumbles that I am staring at a stick.

Things are bad at the colliery. They say the owners will close the lower seam by Michaelmas, and the men are talking of a march to Durham. Ada Pryce's husband has gone to the union hall three nights running and come home without a word. I do not tell you this to fret you. I tell you because I have started to think of the flowers as a kind of argument with the pit, the way they open pink and stubborn against all that grey.

The first bloom opened on Tuesday, as wide as my palm and the colour of the inside of a shell. Its middle is a little pincushion of dark stitches with gold tips, and the leaves around it have gone the deep green of wet slate. I sat on the step with my tea going cold and did not get up for an hour.
