Sunflowers across a upper back tattoo

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

Three sunflowers are shown, with a large bloom in the foreground and two smaller heads behind it, set against green foliage and a blue background wash. The petals use shaded yellows and oranges, and the dark centres are detailed with fine stippled texture. The tattoo fills the right shoulder blade area of the upper back, with the bare skin and a black strap top framing it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The allotment at the end of Harrow Lane had been let to nobody for three summers before Marjorie Pell decided it was hers. She cleared the bindweed with a fork borrowed from the church hall, and by August the sunflowers had grown taller than the shed roof, heads bowed like men at a funeral who had forgotten why they came. Her neighbour, a retired postman called Desmond Quay, leaned on the gate every evening to tell her the seeds were wrong for the soil, and every evening she gave him a bucket of windfall apples to carry home.

The big bloom in the middle went first, as the biggest ones always do. Its petals curled at the tips and turned the colour of old marmalade, and the centre filled with seeds packed so tightly they looked like the grain of a dark wooden table. Marjorie cut it on a Thursday, carried it to the kitchen, and set it in a jug that had belonged to her mother. Desmond watched her from the gate and said nothing for once, which she took as a kind of apology.

In October she counted the seed heads on the drying stalks and found there were enough to plant the whole lane again. She saved them in paper envelopes, wrote the year on each one, and pinned them inside the shed door. The following April, Desmond found a single seedling pushing up through the cracked path by his own gate, and he left it alone, and by July it was taller than his letterbox.
