Pink grenade with ribbon on a leg
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A grenade with a segmented pink and purple body and a pin and lever at the top is wrapped in a ribbon tied in a bow with dark dots. Bold black outlines define the forms, and the shading uses lighter and darker tones of pink and purple to give the metal a rounded look. The design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

Right, sit down, the chairs won't get any taller. Some of you will remember the pink grenade, and the rest of you have been told about it at the bar, so let me set it straight. It was the summer of 1979, and Mr Dunn had a practice grenade in the cadet hut behind the gym, a lump of cast iron with no fuse and no business being anywhere near fourteen-year-olds. Somebody decided it needed to be pink for the Christmas raffle. Somebody else, Janet Hollis, I won't say who, tied a ribbon round its neck and dotted the bow with black ink so it looked like it had been to a party.

It sat on the staff room table for three days. Nobody bought a ticket. Then on the Friday, Mrs Ashcroft picked it up in assembly, held it up over her head the way you'd hold a trophy, and said, "And who thought this was funny?" The pin was never meant to come out, but the ribbon had snagged on her cardigan button, and the pin slid clean out into her palm. The whole hall went so quiet you could hear the radiators tick. Then Mrs Ashcroft started to laugh, and she couldn't stop, and she had to sit down on the stage steps with the thing in her lap.
She kept the pin. She kept it on her desk for the next nine years, and when she retired she gave it to Janet at the school gate with the ribbon still tied on, and told her not to lose it. Janet's still got it, I'm told, in a tin with her wedding ring. So go on, get another drink in, and if anybody here is carrying something they meant to hand back years ago, you know where to find me.
