Cartoon cat on an ice cream cone on ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

A bold black outlined cartoon cat with a small pink flower on its head sits on top of a red ice cream scoop in a cone with dotted pink shading. The black linework is thick and even, with flat fills of pink, red and maroon and only light shading on the scoop. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against bare skin, with denim jeans visible at the bottom and part of another tattoo at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ottilie Brandt had sold ninety-one cones from the hatch of the Gullstone Pier Fun Fair by half past two, and the ninety-second customer was a cat. It arrived on the lip of the counter wearing a pink flower the size of a saucer, pale as milk, with whiskers drawn in three black strokes a side, and it sat down as if it had paid in advance.

"One strawberry," said the cat, though Ottilie could see no mouth to say it with. It simply knew. She had run the hatch for six summers and had long stopped being surprised by what the gulls knew.

Her uncle Pim swore the cat had been wandering the fair since the Dodgems opened, always turning up for the last scoop of the day. Ottilie didn't believe him until she pressed the pink ice cream into the cone with her wooden spatula and the cat climbed onto the top, settled in like a small round lady on a sofa, and purred so loudly the Ferris wheel seemed to slow down to listen.

Nobody paid for it. That night Ottilie found the coins in her apron pocket, every one stamped with a tiny cat's face, and beneath them a note scribbled on a paper napkin: Thank you, the strawberry was perfect. Tomorrow, vanilla.
