Stitched dolls and hearts on a calf

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A stitched rag-doll girl with button eyes stands beside a red heart with a plaster and a red heart pinned with stitches, while a stitched teddy bear sits below her. Black outlines define the figures, and the hearts and dress are filled with red and pink ink. Small black heart outlines sit at the edge of the frame, and the composition is a loose cluster across the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the village of Lessory, where the river bent twice before it reached the mill, a seamstress named Hilde Marrow kept a basket of mended things under her stairs. Nobody asked what she did with them. They brought her torn coats, cracked crockery and hearts that had gone soft at the edges, and she sewed them shut with red thread and sent them home.

One winter a girl came to her door with a rag doll under one arm and a teddy bear with no ears under the other. The girl's name was Pell, and she said the doll had stopped sitting up straight. Hilde took the doll to her table, looked at its button eyes for a long while, and said that a thing held together by stitches was not broken, only remembered. She stitched its seam and gave it back with a new dress the colour of plums.

Pell asked for the bear too, and Hilde shook her head. The bear, she said, had been loved hard, and loved things carried their own patches. Instead she cut a heart from red cloth, pinned it with a dozen black pins to keep the shape, and set it on the windowsill to dry. Then she cut a second heart, sewed a square of plaster over a split in its side, and set that beside the first.

In spring the girl came back for the hearts. The pins were gone and the stitches had knitted into the cloth, and the bear, when Pell found it again behind the mill, was sitting upright in the grass, waiting for someone to notice it was there.
