Zombie Hello Kitty tattoo on a leg

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character with green skin, red dripping blood and a pink bow with a small skull is shown alongside a purple dress, a spiderweb and several black bats. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat colour fills and small green shading on the face and limbs. The design is centred on a patch of skin, with the bats placed around the figure.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had logged eleven umbrellas and a tuba before the green creature climbed onto the lost property counter at ten past eleven. It stood about the height of a milk bottle, with two black dots for eyes, no mouth at all, and a bow the colour of rhubarb with a tiny skull stitched into the middle. Its purple dress was the shade of a bruised plum. Something dripped from its ears in slow red threads, and it did not seem to mind.

"You'll need the form," Dilys said, because the rules were the rules, and because the alternative was to think about the drips. The creature studied the form for a long time. It stopped at the box marked item description, pressed one green paw flat on the counter, and left a damp print that smelled faintly of pennies. Outside, a spiderweb strung across the signal box window caught the platform lamp and held it like a net holds a moon. Three bats kept looping round the light, stitching little black wings through the dark.

"Miscellaneous," the creature wrote, or would have, had it held a pen. Dilys wrote it for it. Then she asked what had been lost, and it tapped its own chest twice with a flat green hand, and the bow gave a small, polite nod.

Dilys did not believe in lost hearts. She checked the shelves anyway, past the prams and the single roller skate, until she found a biscuit tin logged in 1987 under a label nobody had ever read. Inside, under a folded timetable, something was still ticking. She closed the lid, signed the form, and handed the tin across the counter. The creature tucked it under one arm, bowed, and walked out onto the platform, where the last train was already waiting with its doors wide open.
