Realistic coloured tattoo of a pink hibiscus-style flower with green leaves on the upper thigh.

Pink hibiscus flower on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A pink, hibiscus-style flower with a yellow-tipped stamen and dark red centre sits on a stem with green leaves and a bud. Soft shading and fine petal veining give the flower a realistic, painterly look against a blurred green foliage background. The tattoo is shown in close framing on the upper leg, with denim shorts visible at the top of the frame.

Sit down, love, the lift has been stuck since Tuesday, so you'll hear this the long way up. Eleven floors of stairs, every landing smelling of somebody's onions. I'm telling you this so you understand that nobody in Wrenfield House grew anything. Concrete doesn't let you. Then Mrs Okonedo came up from the ground floor with a carrier bag, and inside was a stick of green wood no longer than your forearm, wrapped in a wet tea towel.

She stood it in a bucket of rainwater on the sunny end of her balcony rail and said it would sulk for a year before it did anything. Everybody laughed. Mr Dunmore from four said a hibiscus would never survive the wind up here, not in a million years. Mrs Okonedo said her mother had kept one alive through three house moves and a war, and she could manage a bucket.

It sulked. Then one morning in June there were three leaves, glossy as wet slate, and by August a bud the size of a thumb. Then the whole thing opened in the space of an afternoon, pink as a cheap sweet, its throat dark red, the stamen tipped with yellow like a tiny lamp. We all came out onto our balconies to look. People I had not spoken to in nine years leaned over their rails and said nothing at all.

The flower lasted one day. It always does, she told me, that's the trick of it. Next morning it lay crumpled on the car park tarmac, and the children from the bottom flats were carrying it about like a prize. Mrs Okonedo only smiled and went to check the bucket. Something new was already forming on the stem.
