Pink lotus flowers across a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
Several pink lotus blooms with yellow centres cover the outer thigh, with a cluster of large flowers at the top and smaller blooms lower down. Loose petals drift down the leg toward the knee. The petals are shaded with fine lines and soft gradients of pink and red, set against pale skin and a dark background.

Priya was the one who dared to climb the wall. She was eleven, with a torn school blazer and a plan to steal one bloom for her grandmother, who had not left her chair since the winter. Mrs Okonedo found her crouched on the flagstones at dusk, one hand hovering over the largest flower, its centre gone the colour of egg yolk.
"Take it and the pond keeps the petals," the old woman said, not unkindly. "That is the bargain with lotus. You may have the flower, but it will not stay where you put it."
Priya took the bloom anyway and ran. All the way home petals slipped from her cupped hands, one by one, and by the time she reached the gate there was only a bare, dripping stalk. Her grandmother laughed when she saw it, then cried, then asked to be wheeled to the window. The next morning the pond had three new buds, and a trail of pink petals ran down the lane toward the river, each one still curled like a small boat.
