Ivy Pargeter kept three pots of peonies on her balcony at the top of the block. Everyone said they'd never flower that high, with the wind coming off the car park like a blade. She sang to them every evening, flat as a pancake, and they bloomed anyway, great heavy heads of mauve and pink so full the pigeons sat in them and sulked.
Then the council painted the block grey, and Ivy went into hospital with her hip. The pots were left out in the rain. Her grandson came up with a watering can that leaked from the spout, and he sprinkled them every day after school, mostly splashing his own trainers and very little else.
The bud on the left stayed shut all that summer, tight as a fist. He swore it was sulking. Then one morning in July, with nobody watching, it opened, pale at the heart and purple at the rim, and the whole stairwell smelled of it. Ivy came home that Thursday on a stick. She stood on the landing a long time, looking at the flower, and for once in her life she had nothing to say.
