Pink lotus on the lower back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A large lotus flower is tattooed across the lower back of a person wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans. The petals are outlined and shaded in soft gradients of pink and red, with lighter highlights toward the centre. The flower fills the middle of the frame against warm, pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jar came ashore on the third tide after the Mary Ellen broke on Gannet Skerry, wedged in a crate of tea gone to pulp. My father wanted it tipped back into the sea. I carried it up the cliff path wrapped in his oilskin and set it on the sill of the lamp room, because the cottage had no sun and the lamp room had nothing but glass and weather.

Inside were a dozen knobbled roots, dry as cork. Father sniffed at them and called them a waste of good soil. In June I pressed them into a bucket of rainwater from the tarn behind the cottage, and by August one leaf had broken the surface, round and flat as a coin. Then came the flower, pink at the edges and paling to cream at its heart, its petals folded tight like a fist that had made up its mind to open.

It kept hours no sensible plant would keep. It unfurled when the first gulls went out over the Point and closed again at dusk, just as I climbed the stair to strike the lamp. Father said flowers had no business near a lighthouse. I said I had never met a flower that minded being watched, and he laughed for the first time since Mam died.

The winter the wick failed, I stayed up three nights trimming it by hand. On the fourth morning I came down to the tarn and found the lotus open wide, every petal turned towards the lamp room window, as if it had been keeping watch for me. I didn't tell Father. I put the kettle on and let the light come in.
