I nearly didn't come to the reunion on Saturday, and I'm glad I did, though I'm writing instead of talking because you vanished after the buffet like the caterers' trays. Mr Hollis still can't spell chrysanthemum and he still thinks the Bunsen burner in lab four was my fault. I should have said so properly at the time.

What I wanted to tell you is about the orchid. You remember the pink one I took from the nursery at the end of Year Eleven, the one in the chipped pot that the glasshouse was going to skip? Everyone said it was finished. Its leaves had gone yellow and the flower stalk had snapped at the base. I kept it on the windowsill above the sink for three winters and it did nothing but sulk.

Then in March a single green bud came out of the old stem, no thicker than a staple. I watched it for weeks as if it owed me money. Last Tuesday it opened into one flower, pink and folded like paper that had been pressed flat, with a dark little throat in the middle. I stood there in my dressing gown with the kettle screaming and cried, which is absurd over a plant.

I have bought a new pot and stopped expecting anything. Come and see it if you're ever in Maidstone. The second bud is already swelling.
