A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cook kept a sunflower in a cracked tin on the galley sill because the captain had said nothing green would survive the Biscay crossing, and he wanted to prove him wrong. The crew called it Old Gold. Pieter, the ordinary seaman, taught it to climb a length of twine, and Mrs Ansah, who scrubbed the pots, said a plant that followed the sun was a plant with somewhere to be. When the ship lay becalmed off the Azores for nine days the water ran short, and the cook gave the sunflower his own ration, a tin cup a day, until the captain found out and docked it from his wages. He said nothing about the plant.

On the tenth morning a breeze came up from the west, and the whole ship turned its face to it like a crowd at a parade. The cook went to the sill and found the sunflower bent low, its great yellow head dropped on its stem, dark seeds already blackening in the centre. He cupped it in both hands as if it were a bird and carried it up on deck. The captain looked at it for a long time, then ordered the cup filled.

Forty years later, a grocer in Hull still kept a sunflower in the window for the cook's sake, and told anyone who asked that the ship had brought home one seed.
