Colourful floral tattoo on the foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A cluster of flowers runs across the top of a foot, with a large teal bloom in the centre flanked by two pink flowers with yellow centres. Green leaves and teal sprigs fill the gaps between them. Bold black outlines define the petals and leaves, with softer shading inside the petals and foliage. The colour ink is bright and fills the design evenly against the pale skin and blue backdrop.

Now sit yourself down and mind the kettle, because this is the story of the blue peony and the Pryce girls, and I'll not tell it twice. Nobody in Cwm Dulas had ever seen a blue flower until the spring the new deputy came up from the colliery offices with a seed packet he'd bought in Cardiff and a face like a wet Sunday. He pushed it into the black ground behind the chapel, where nothing grew but coal dust and grudges.

Mrs Eirlys Pryce laughed at him, and then she went out with a trowel. She had two girls, Nia and Dilys, both red-cheeked and yellow-ribboned, and they carried water from the standpipe in a tin bath every evening for a month, sloshing it over the cinders. The peony came up teal as a kingfisher's back, heavy in the head, and the girls swore its petals had black ink round every edge, as if somebody had drawn it to keep the wind from taking it off the hill.
Then the horn went that October, and the blue bloom was the only thing on the row still standing. Nia had picked two pink campions from the verge that morning and tucked them either side of it, yellow-eyed, the way her mother taught her to frame a good thing. Dilys ran down the terrace with her ribbons flying to fetch her father, and she said something at the gate that she never told me herself, though her father did: "Look, the ground's kept something back for us."
Men came up the lane that night with their lamps turned low, and not one of them went down the pit when the horn sounded again at five. They stood round that bed of earth like it was a grave they'd been promised, and nobody spoke until the lamplight found the peony and made its black edges shine. Now give me that cup.
