Pink ribbon and running horse on the back

Back · Colour · Photo

A pink awareness ribbon forms the backdrop for a running horse in black outline with white and pale blue shading. The ribbon has soft pink shading and a bold black outline, and the horse is drawn with clean, heavy linework. The design is centred on the upper back against plain, lightly lit skin.

Sit down, the kettle's only just gone off and the fire in the back room will take another hour to think about it. You want the horse story or the one about the Tuesday the bell rang itself? Horse, then. Everybody in Sandgate Terrace knows the horse.

Nineteen forty-seven, late in the season, when the bathing machines were stacked along the promenade like rotten teeth, a grey mare came off the moor road at a dead gallop and went straight into the surf. Mrs Pargeter at number nine swore she'd seen a length of pink ribbon knotted in the mare's mane, tied the way a girl ties a parcel for the post. Nobody believed Mrs Pargeter, but nobody argued either, because she'd been right about the weather for thirty years.

The horse ran the tideline every morning after that, from the harbour wall to the Dunmore rocks and back, and every morning Eddie Lusk the milkman tried to catch her with a halter and every morning she left him standing with his cans. The ribbon faded, then frayed, then was replaced by a fresh one that nobody ever saw being tied.

When Eddie finally gave up, he stopped on the wall with his cart and simply watched her go. Her shoulders caught the first light, her tail streamed out like a flag somebody had forgotten to take in, and he said afterwards it was the first time in his life he had felt like a man standing still on purpose. Then she was gone round the point, pink bright against the grey, and the kettle, I'm afraid, has boiled dry.
