Silhouette figure with stars and flowers on ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a female figure in a dancing pose is the central subject, set against a swirling pink ribbon that runs vertically down the skin. Pink and black outlined flowers, black outlined stars and small butterflies surround the figure, with simple fills and clean outlines. The tattoo is shown in colour on the side of the torso, with the composition arranged along the length of the ribs.

The snow had closed the pass by the third day, so the innkeeper's widow let the travellers sit close to the hearth and told them about the dancer on the lake. Her name was Ysolde. She had come up the mountain road in a borrowed cloak with a single red ribbon in her pocket and no shoes fit for snow.

Every night after the bells, she walked out onto the frozen mere and danced. The stars, tired of looking down at nothing but ice, leaned close to watch. They were lonely up there, the widow said, and a star will always go where there is music. Pink flowers pushed up through the frost at her feet, and pale moths settled on her arms and did not fly away. The shepherds stopped drinking at the inn because they did not want to miss a single turn.

The stars grew bold and began to ask for things. One wanted her ribbon to tie round its cold point. Another asked for her shoes. Ysolde gave them freely, for she had never been one to keep what she could share. The last star asked her to dance until the thaw so that it might never grow tired of watching. She agreed, on the condition that they would hold the light steady for her.

When the thaw came the lake was bare grass and the girl was gone. The innkeeper found a red ribbon tied to the gatepost, and that spring the hedges along the pass bloomed pink in a single line, as if someone had danced through them in the dark.
