Pink rose and orange fruit on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A pink rose with soft shading sits at the top left, with green leaves and thorny stems running down the leg. Beside it, a large orange fruit with a green calyx and a long tapering tail forms the centre of the design. The smooth, gradual shading gives the fruit and petals a rounded, dimensional look against the pale skin, with the tattoo set in a tall, vertical composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The water carter Tobiah Ash came down the Salt Track in the fourth week of the dry, with two barrels lashed to the bed of his truck and a sack of seed he had no reason to carry. Nobody on the track asked what it was for. They only asked whether he had passed the well at Keld, and he had not, because the well had gone to sand the summer before.

At Keld there was a single pink rose bush that had come up through the cracked yard of an old inn. It bore one fruit each year, orange as a lamp and shaped like a drop about to fall, with a thin tail that ran down into the ground. The innkeeper's daughter, Maud Corrie, had told him as a boy that the tail went all the way to the water, and that if you cut the fruit you would hear it running.

Tobiah found the bush alive and the yard swept clean. Maud was dead of fever, or gone east; the story changed with whoever told it. He knelt, took the fruit in both hands, and did not cut it. He pressed his thumb to its skin, and the tail, thin as wire, let fall a single bead into the dust. Within an hour the bead had darkened the ground, and a thread of wet crept along the track toward the dry well, as if following a man's footprints.

He dug where the wet ran out. At four feet the spade rang on stone, then gave a sound like a held breath. He drove back into town with two full barrels and a rose thorn in his palm, and told nobody where the water had come from, which is how the Keld well came to be called Maud's Tail by the drovers and never by its proper name.
