Red poppies with stems on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows four red poppies on long green stems, with one bloom at the top, two at the sides and one at the base. The petals have soft shading in deep red and orange, with dark crimson at the folds and a yellow centre visible on the lower flower. The design is set against pale skin on a dark background, with the stems curving gently down the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sheep were in the top field again, and Mrs Ostler's bonnet had been seen going through the gap by the hedge, so when Hal came up the lane with the cart that morning he already knew the poppies would be the talk of the village by noon. Four stems to a clump, they had come up through the cut barley after a wet spring, as if somebody had dropped a handful of coals on the stubble and forgotten to stamp them out.

Dunstan Pell wanted them ploughed under before the tithe man came round. He stood at the gatepost with his hands in his coat and said red was a colour for trouble and not for a working field. His daughter Nell, who kept the bees on the south slope, said the bees went wild for those flowers and that a field full of bees was worth more than a field full of barley. They argued until the light went orange over the Downs, and neither of them would be the first to turn the horse.

Hal was sent to measure the boundary, a chain in one hand and a stick in the other, and found the poppies thicker along the bottom of the field where the ground stayed damp. He knelt to look at one bloom. Its petals were crumpled like silk kept too long in a drawer, dark at the creases and bright as a struck match at the edges, and a little yellow heart sat in the middle with the pollen dusted over it like flour.

When he told Pell, the old man said nothing for a long while. Then he unhooked the plough chain from the horse, coiled it over the gatepost, and walked up the lane without his hat, which Hal had never once seen him do. The poppies went on flowering, and the bees came in from the Downs to them all week.
