Two raspberries on a lower leg

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

Two overlapping raspberries are drawn with rounded, petal-like segments and bold black outlines. The berries shade from deep red to lighter pink, with small highlights and a teal stem at the top right. The design is centred on the skin and fills most of the frame against a softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every July the wind came off the sea so hard that the keeper's wife could not hang washing, so Morwenna Penhale tended the raspberry canes along the harbour wall instead, where the stones held the day's heat. Her husband said the canes were foolishness on a rock like Gull Head. He said it again the morning she came up the path with a basket so heaped the berries rolled out of her apron pockets and bounced down the steps.

The lamp needed oil, and the supply boat from Porthkerris had not come in three weeks. Tobias climbed the iron stairs each dusk to trim the wick and check the glass. Morwenna pressed the best berries into a jar, sealed it with wax, and carried it down to the boathouse where the fishermen kept their lines. She tied a length of teal wool to the nearest cane so the men would know which stake was theirs.

In the third week the fog came in thick as wool and lay on the bay for two nights. Tobias could not see his own gallery rail, and the lamp's beam only lit the white wall of mist. On the second night he heard a boat's oars knocking somewhere below, lost and close to the rocks. Morwenna had stood a lantern in the boathouse window among the canes, and its small yellow light showed the boy at the oars the gap in the reef.

In the morning two red berries lay on the boathouse step, still cool with dew, and the boy had left the teal wool knotted round the stake. Tobias said nothing about foolishness after that. He dug a new bed along the wall himself, and the canes came up that autumn fat and dark along the stones.
