Apples and blossom on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two apples, one in front of the other, with five-petalled blossoms and leaves arranged around them. The apples and leaves are rendered with dense hatching and crosshatching, giving a shaded, engraved look. The design is in black and grey only and fills the upper thigh, with a hand visible at the left edge of the frame.

The wasps had found the windfalls under the old Bramley before I did, so Dad sent me down the rows with a bucket and a stick, and that is how I came to be standing in the long grass when Mrs Pryce's van pulled into the yard. She wanted the two old trees at the bottom of the field cleared for the new road. She had a clipboard and a man in a hi-vis vest who kept checking his phone for a signal that wasn't there. Dad walked her down past the Blenheims while I stayed where I was, turning apples over with the toe of my welly and looking for the ones without a bruise. Every one that had dropped from the high branches had a split skin and a blackbird standing on it.

Grandad planted those two trees the year Mam was born, and he used to say an apple tree remembers who lays a hand on it. I didn't believe him. When the men came with the saw in October, I sat on the stile with a tin of the good fruit on my knee and watched them work until the trunks gave way. Afterwards I took a pip from the cut face of the stump, where the rings were brown and tight as fingerprints, and put it in my coat pocket. It dried on the windowsill all winter. In March I planted it in a pot by the back door, and it has been refusing to die ever since.
