Pink flower tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large, open pink flower with layered petals fills most of the frame, with its centre near the top and outer petals spilling down the arm. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients from deep pink to pale highlights, giving a realistic, softly rendered look. The tattoo is shown in pink ink only, with the arm and a light blue button-up shirt visible around it.

Dear Nell, the big top went onto the lorry on Tuesday, and Mr Sayer has sold the elephants' winter hay to a farmer outside Ludlow, so we are not going to Ludlow this year, or any year, I suspect. I am writing from the step of the wardrobe wagon with a pot of pink peonies on my knee. Mrs Dacre planted them in a tin bath the spring we joined at Harrowby, and they have outlasted two lions, a fire-eater and a canvas roof that leaked every Saturday.

They are not the bright, sugary pink of the posters. Each petal folds over the next like the layers of a good pastry, deep at the heart where the colour pools, then paling until the outer ones are nearly cream at the edges. Ida, who used to fly from the high bar before her knee gave out, says the flower looks as though someone painted it very slowly so as not to make a mistake. She has been showing a buyer from a garden centre in Shrewsbury around the yard, and she told him the peonies came with the wagons, which is the closest thing to a deed we have.
Yesterday the buyer came back with a cheque and asked for the bulbs for his own shop. I watched him count the pots and I did not stop him. Then this morning, when the frost had silvered the field, one more bloom opened on the lowest stem, late and enormous, its petals loosening one by one like the old tent ropes coming undone.
So I have kept it back. The lorry leaves at noon without me. I am going to dig the tin bath into the field behind the sheds, where the grass has never heard of a crowd. Come and see it when you can, and bring a spade.
