Pink rose on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A pink rose with soft, blended shading and green leaves sits on the upper shoulder near the collarbone. The petals show lighter highlights and darker pink folds, giving a smooth, painterly finish. The soft pink and green sit against pale skin, a white knitted jumper and long dark hair, with the frame cropped below the face.

Dear Ottilie,

The cutting took root on the eleventh day of the new year, in the hydroponic bay where the light comes in pink from the hull lamps. I know you said roses were a waste of water, but Mam's bush was the last thing I packed, and it has finally thrown a bud the colour of a fingernail held to a candle. I have been sitting with it for an hour, watching the petals fold over one another as if they are arguing about who gets to open first.

The old hands say a rose wants a cold winter before it blooms properly. We have no winter here, only the timer on the grow racks, so I have been cheating. I cool the bay at night and let the water run a shade colder, and the leaves have gone dark green at the edges, the way the picture in Mam's album did. You would laugh at me, talking to a shrub.

Come to the bay before the next shift change. Bring the scissors and the good jar. If the bloom is still open by then, I want you to take the first flower to the council garden and set it in the window where the Earth-facing glass is. Tell them it is from the cutting Mam carried out of the old country, and let them decide whether that is a story or a fact.

Love, Hana
