Pink rose tattoo on a side torso
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows a large floral tattoo on the side of a person's torso, partly covered by a light patterned shirt and the waistband of blue jeans. Several full pink and red roses sit among green leaves and fine dark vines. The roses are shaded with soft tonal gradients, and the composition is a close, slightly angled view with hands holding the waistband.

You learn the canal by its smells before you learn its names. Diesel and wet rope at Braunston, then the sour sweetness of the brewery at Hatton, then nothing at all for three miles of willows. Your uncle Frank taught you to steer with your hip against the tiller, not your hands, and to keep the roses on the cabin side painted the same red as the lock gates so the lock-keepers would wave you through without looking twice. He painted them himself every spring, one coat, never two, because he said a rose that is too finished stops looking like it might drop a petal.

The summer you turn sixteen the boat gets stuck at Foxton with a broken prop shaft and a sky the colour of dishwater. You sit on the gunwale with a sandwich you don't want and watch a woman on the towpath sketch the lock beam in a battered notebook. She tells you the roses on the cabin are the best thing she has seen all week and asks if she can draw them. You say yes before you think about it, and she sits beside you pencilling pink and leaf-green onto cartridge paper while the rain comes and goes in long grey sheets.
When the engineer finally arrives, the drawing is finished, and she tears it out and gives it to you folded in four. It is not the boat at all. It is a rose climbing up the side of a bridge, its stem wrapped twice round the iron, its bloom pushing out through a crack in the brickwork as if it had simply decided to be there. Uncle Frank studies it for a long time at the tiller. Then he gets out his brushes and paints one small pink rose on the wheelhouse door, on the side nobody can see unless they stand exactly where you are.
