Purple rose and skulls on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A detailed purple rose is the central subject, with its petals rendered in soft violet tones and white highlights. Two weathered skulls sit behind and below the flower, shaded in grey and brown with sharp contrast against the dark background. The composition wraps diagonally around the limb, with small droplets added across the petals and bone.

The glasshouse at Sallow Reach had been sealed for eleven winters, and Maud still counted the condenser drips as she crossed the threshold, one bead at a time along the frame. Halloran was already at the bench with his sleeves rolled past the elbow, waiting for the crate she had hauled up from the drowned crypts of St Alfege. She set it down between the trays of seedlings and unwrapped the oilcloth one piece at a time, the way her mother had taught her to handle anything the water had softened.

Halloran lifted the larger skull and turned it in the lamplight. Its cheekbone was gone and a hairline crack ran from the crown to the jaw, dark with silt. "The water got in here," he said, as if the bone had told him so. "That's what feeds the violet. Lime off the old dead, drawn up through the rootstock. Every bloom we've had since spring has come out of somebody's ground." He pointed to the far wall, where a slate ledger was hung with names chalked in a neat, unhurried hand, one beside each cutting. Some were scratched out. Most were not.

Maud asked what the rose owed. Halloran didn't answer straight away. He reached for the bone saw, then set it down and pressed the skull into her palms instead, heavier than it looked. She understood that the choice was hers, and that he had already made his.

By morning the cutting on the bench had put out a bud the colour of a bruise, and the lime tray was empty. Maud went to the ledger with a stub of chalk and wrote one more name in the margin, leaving the space beside it blank for the next crate.
