Pink rose vine across a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a trailing vine of pink roses with green leaves and stems, running from the upper arm across the shoulder towards the collarbone. The shading is soft and blended, with watery pink washes and small darker accents, giving a painted look rather than hard outlines. The top panel is a closer view of the shoulder, and the lower panel is a wider shot showing the design against a grey tank top and a fine chain necklace.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had the rose from the old wall, and he never let anyone forget it. When the abbey was sold to the Crown in the year of the bad harvest, the commissioners wanted only the lead from the roof. Nobody wanted the vine that climbed the south cloister, a briar of pink roses gone wild over two centuries, its stems as thick as my wrist.

I was given the cutting because I could draw. Brother Anselm told me to paint what I saw and not what I expected, so I sat on an upturned bucket for three weeks, mixing rose madder with a drop of gall and letting the washes bleed into the paper. The petals were never one colour. Where the light caught them they were nearly white, and in the shade they went the colour of a bruised plum. The trick, I learned, was to leave the paper bare where the light fell.

On the last morning the cart came for the stone. I wrapped the cuttings in damp sacking and walked beside the carter with my painting folded inside my coat. At the lane's end I looked back and saw the vine still on the wall, its roses open against the grey stone, and a labourer already working his saw along the lowest stem. I ran back. I could not save the wall, but I took one rose from the pile of cuttings and pressed it between the pages of my book, where it is still pink.
