Lilac sprig on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small sprig of lilac with pink and violet flower clusters rises from a thin green stem with several leaves, drawn in delicate fine linework. The flowers are softly shaded from deep purple at the tip to lighter pink lower down, with touches of green in the leaves. The tattoo sits centrally on the ankle against a plain skin background, with a blurred brown fur surface behind the foot.

Margaret pins the sprig to your lapel just as the band finishes the quickstep, licking her thumb to smooth the stem. The florist on Cliff Road had only one bunch left on Friday, she says, and it would be a crime to let it go to waste on a Saturday. You can smell it through the cigarette haze and the sweat of the Pavilion's wooden floor, sweet and faintly bitter, like cough sweets left in a coat pocket.

The hall is hot enough to make the tall windows run with damp. Ronnie is on the ticket table with the cashbox and a face like thunder, because the lads from the depot have turned up uninvited and are making a nuisance of themselves by the cloakroom. Margaret squeezes your hand and says nobody is going to spoil the evening, least of all a pair of dockers with ginger hair and no manners.
A sailor asks you for the next foxtrot. He dances the way he talks, all elbows and apology, and treads on your good shoes twice before you both laugh. Over his shoulder you watch Margaret lead her own partner in a slow circle, her head tipped back, her laugh carrying over the brass.
When the last waltz comes round, the lilac has begun to brown at the tips and the scent has thinned to something you have to lean in to find. You take it out, press it flat between the pages of the hymn book in your coat pocket, and tell yourself you will bring her a fresh one next Saturday, and that she will say it's a crime to waste the money.
