Small purple sprig on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small sprig of purple flowers with thin green stems and a single pale green leaf is tattooed on the side of an ankle. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft, light shading in the petals. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a grey sock and a brown fleece blanket, with plenty of empty space around it.

The envelope had come up from the coast with a stamp franked twice, once in Penzance and again somewhere past Exeter, as if the post had been reluctant to let it go. Mrs Ada Pollard turned it over on the counter of the Cragge Lane sorting office and sniffed. Something dry rattled inside, and when she slit the flap with the brass knife, a sprig slid out onto the blotter: five small purple flowers on a green stem as thin as cotton thread, one pale leaf clinging to its side.

There was no letter, only a card in pencil that read *for the one who waters the wall*. Ada knew the wall. It ran along the back of the churchyard, where for thirty years she had pressed her thumb into the mortar each spring to coax out whatever seeds the wind had left. Nobody else had ever bothered to ask what grew there.

She spent the afternoon with the sprig under a magnifying glass, matching it against Culpeper and the drawings in her late husband's seed catalogue. It was not a violet and not a vetch. In the end she found it in the margin of his handwriting, an old note: *blue-purple, grows where nothing was planted, leave it be.*

At dusk she carried the sprig out to the wall and pushed its stem into the crack where the mortar was soft. Then she wrote a reply on the back of the card and posted it herself through the box in the lane, unstamped, with her own hand.
