Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair in a loose bun is photographed from behind, showing a black tattoo across her upper back. The tattoo has a large ornate decorative initial A with scrolling flourishes on the left, followed by four lines of gothic-style serif lettering. The ink is solid black with soft edges on warm skin tones, and the background is blurred with warm pink light and bokeh.

Dear Tomas,

The frost came early this year and took the last of the runner beans before I'd picked them. Your uncle says it's the hill wind, but I know the sound it makes in the chimney. You'll think me fanciful, but I keep thinking about the book you left on the hall table, the one with the marbled boards and the illuminated A on the first page. You asked me to keep it dry. I have.

Mrs Pritchard from the shop came round on Tuesday asking after you, and whether the young man who bought the Ashdown timber had finished his survey of the Holloway path. I told her you were in the city being clever with ledgers, which is true enough. She said the path had been closed since the spring floods and that the alder had come down across the stile. I did not tell her I had walked it on Sunday with the dog, and that the stile was whole and the path clear as a bell, and that someone had hung a lantern on the ash tree at the bend, just as you used to do when you were small and frightened of the dark under the trees.

I am not writing to scold you. Your cousin says the city is loud and that you have not slept properly since the summer. Come home at the solstice if you can. The forest will keep its shape while you are away, and so will I, mostly.

Copy out the lines inside the cover for yourself if you need them. You always did want things finished before you let them go. Gold does not glitter, and the old oak does not wither. Come and see for yourself.

Love, Nan
