The rain had been coming sideways across Hallam Street Market since eight, and by eleven the canvas over my stall had begun to sag like a wet sock. I was wedging a bucket under the worst drip when Dorothy Fenn came splashing up the aisle with a carrier bag held to her chest. Inside sat a pink sewing machine, the old sort with a rounded body and a chrome handwheel, and it was making a noise like a kettle left on in another room.

She wanted it working by Saturday. It had been her mother's, bought from a catalogue in 1962, and her granddaughter was starting at the dressmaking college in Leeds and needed something to practise on that wasn't a borrowed Singer. I unscrewed the faceplate under the lamp. The needle bar had bent a fraction, and pink flakes of old enamel lay on the oilcloth like confetti. Dorothy kept saying she'd always meant to get it serviced.

While I was cleaning the bobbin case I found a scrap of paper rolled up tight inside it, soft as cloth. It was a pattern for a child's bonnet, pencilled in the margin: For Maggie, don't let it pull at the corners. Dorothy read it twice, then laughed in the wet, startled way people do when a memory arrives early.

The rain eased off around noon. I threaded the needle, ran a test seam through a offcut of pink cotton, and the stitches came out straight and even. Dorothy stitched her granddaughter's initials into the corner of the cloth herself while I packed up, and she wouldn't let me take a penny for the oil.
