Camera outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a camera sits on the inside of a wrist. It is drawn in thin, even black linework with a circular lens at the centre and a simple top plate with a shutter button. The plain pale skin and dark background keep the design the clear focus of the photograph.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are up the ladder before the dew has lifted, the Cox's Orange Pippins bruised gold where the wasps have been at them. Your uncle Dai calls up that the light will be wrong by ten, so get the picking done and the camera out before the haze burns off. The camera is his old Pentax, heavy as a brick, and he has never once let you carry it without a strap looped twice round your wrist.

By noon the baskets are stacked in the shade of the Bramley trees and the Severn is a bright seam beyond the hedge. You sit on an upturned crate and wind the film on, click by click, listening to the little mechanical sigh of it. Dai says the trick is not to look at the shot but to look at the thing that makes you want the shot, then to wait a breath longer than feels sensible. You try it on a wasp hanging off a windfall. The wasp does not wait for you. Dai laughs so hard he has to sit down in the grass.

The prints come back in October, in a brown paper envelope with the chemist's stamp on the flap. Most are blurred or thumbs. One is the orchard floor, sharp as a photograph of a dream, with a single apple in the foreground and your own shadow stretched long across the grass. Dai has written on the back in pencil: Waited the breath. Keep the strap on.
