Message in a bottle with red flowers

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A bottle with a rolled paper inside, marked with a small red heart, sits between two red five-petal flowers with black leaves. The design uses bold black outlines with grey shading on the bottle, leaves and petals. Red ink dominates the flowers and heart against a light skin background, and a dark portrait tattoo is partly visible at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The miller's youngest had been writing to the sea for three summers before she thought to ask it anything. She wrote on the backs of seed packets, folded the paper small, and pushed it through the neck of a green glass bottle her father had emptied of cordial. Then she sealed the cork with wax and carried it down to the bottom garden, where the hedge gave way to the old wall and nothing had been planted since her grandmother died.

Nobody in the village knew what she meant to do with it. She dug a hole beside the sundial, laid the bottle on its side the way the rhyme said, and covered it over with brown earth. Her father asked why she was burying good glass. She said the ground was thirsty and a letter ought to go somewhere it could not be lost.

By midsummer two red poppies had come up either side of the spot, then a third, then a fourth, until the wall was speckled with them like a flag. Their leaves came in black-green and sharp at the edges. The miller's wife said the soil had been fed by something, and went quiet about it.

In October a sailor walked up the lane with salt still stiff on his collar and a torn corner of seed packet in his fist. He had carried it four thousand miles in his coat. Her one line was still legible on it: come home, the ground is ready. He knelt by the sundial and pressed his palm flat against the red flowers, and she laughed, because she had never once thought she would have to answer.
