Pisces zodiac symbol tattoo

Blackwork · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a solid black tattoo of the Pisces zodiac symbol, made of two curved arcs joined by a horizontal line with a hooked tail on each side. The lines are thick and smooth, with a thin lighter grey highlight running along parts of the inner curves. The tattoo fills most of a square close-up frame against a plain, lightly textured skin surface.

Mind the third stair, it gives under you, same as my second husband did. Come in out of the wind. The kettle's been on since the Coronation, near enough, and there's a slab of seed cake if you're not too proud. You want the story of the two fish on the hall wall? Everyone who's ever slept under this roof has asked, so you may as well have it with your tea.

My grandfather painted them on a bit of driftwood the year my aunts were born, twins, Ada and Nell, and he said the sea had sent them to him in a bad week. Two fish, nose to tail, going opposite ways, and a length of tarred line running between their mouths so they could never part and never agree. The sisters squabbled over that wood from the cradle to the grave. Nell wanted to swim out past the breakwater. Ada wanted to stay where the boats came in. They never once faced the same direction.

Nell went off to the trawlers when she was nineteen and didn't come back for eleven years. When she did, she stood in that hall with her boots dripping and looked at the plaque a long time. Then she took the penknife from her pocket and cut the line clean through, and she hung the two halves of tarred twine on the hook by the door. She said a thing tied that tight can't turn round to look at the other one, and it was no kindness to keep it trying.

Ada kept the hook. Every spring she takes down the bit of twine, ties a knot in it, and unties it again, the way you'd check a bell is still ringing. The fish still hang on the wall, crooked, pointing at the front door and the back stair at once. Nell never came home a second time. Drink your tea now, while it's hot.
