A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The queen's seal-cutter never let anyone copy the Thrane mark without watching them draw it three times. I was nine when Master Oswin put the copper stylus in my fingers and told me the arrow must point the way the message travels, not the way the messenger walks. Get that wrong and the letter arrived at the wrong gate, or never arrived at all.

Thrane was a river kingdom with few roads worth the name, so everything moved by sealed courier. The crossed lines were the rule of two keys: no sealed letter was opened without a second bearer present, and the cross was struck through the arrow wherever two hands had met over the wax. I pressed that mark ten thousand times before I understood it was not a crest but a promise, and that a promise is only as good as the hand that makes it.

The winter the floods came, the eastern courier did not return. His satchel was found in the reeds with the seal still whole, which should have been impossible. Oswin held it to the lamp for a long while, then passed it to me. The arrow had been struck backwards. Someone had wanted us to believe the letter was returning to the palace when it had been sent out to the enemy.

I reversed the stroke on every seal that week. Then, because a cutter is only as honest as his own hand, I took my wrist to the lamp and inked the arrow there, small enough to hide beneath a cuff, so that the next time a steward gripped my hand to check my oath, he would find it pointing home.
