Pistol in a mesh strap on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A pistol with a detailed slide, trigger guard and grip texture is tattooed on the thigh, with a crosshatched mesh band wrapped around the middle of the gun. The shading moves from deep black to soft grey highlights, giving the metal a rounded, three-dimensional look. The design fills most of the frame against plain skin, with the top edge of a light garment visible.

Dear Ruth, the gale took the last of the slates off the north tower on Tuesday, and under them, in a pocket of mortar behind a loose stone, I found a pistol. It was bound in a band of old cord netting, the sort the fishermen at Cullen used to wrap around their oars, and it had lain so long that the grip had gone the colour of wet slate.

Mr Halloran from the county survey came up with his clipboard and his opinions. He wanted it logged as scrap and gone by Friday. I had the cord in my hands, though, and the mesh had been knotted by someone who knew their business, every diamond the same size. Whoever tied it meant to keep the thing from sliding, the way you'd lash a lantern to a boat. I thought of Eilidh Strang, the bailiff's girl, who used to climb that tower to read because nobody could see her up there.

I took it down to the lodge and worked the slide with a rag and linseed. It still moved, which surprised me. Scratched into the metal was a date, 1743, and beneath it a line of initials I could not make out in the lamplight. I have not decided whether to tell Halloran. I think I will hand it to the museum in Elgin and let them argue about it.

Last night I sat by the window and watched the tower in the moonlight, its broken top open like a mouth. Tell Mam I am eating properly. Your brother, Iain.
