Revolver and garter on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A revolver sits across the thigh with a pink ruffled garter wrapped around the leg, tied in a bow with a small heart charm at the centre. The revolver is shaded in silver and grey with smooth, realistic highlights, and a small floral portrait is painted on its side plate. The garter and bow are in coral pink and carry the strongest colour, while the composition is centred on the thigh.

On Skerry Rock the keeper's wife kept the revolver in a biscuit tin beneath the stairs to the lamp room, wrapped in oilcloth, because the wreckers of Carrick had long memories and short tempers. Nobody on the mainland had seen her fire it. She fired it once, over the bows of a boat that came in without a light, and afterwards she wiped the grip with butter and put it back in the tin.

Her name was Morag Dunn, though the fishermen called her the Lady of the Lamp. Each spring she wound a garter of coral ribbon, three rows of ruffles her mother had stitched, and tied it in a bow with a small silver heart at the knot. The gunsmith in Thurso had engraved the side plate of the revolver with a sprig of heather and a woman's face, and Morag would not say whose face it was.
The night the wreckers came, there were six of them and a lantern with a cracked glass. Their leader, a man called Gil Harrow, told her to put the light out and the rock would be theirs to pick clean. Morag heard him out from the top of the stairs. She laid the revolver on the rail where he could see it, and spoke of her sister, who had drowned off that rock with a lamp in her hands, and of the promise she had made that the light would never go dark again.
They rowed back to Carrick in the grey before dawn, and the lamp turned all that winter. When the revolver was returned to its tin, the silver heart stayed at the knot of the ribbon, catching the light each time the beam swept across the water.
