Black and grey realism tattoo of a handgun with a lace-patterned garter band wrapped around it, on the upper thigh.

Pistol tattoo with lace garter on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic black and grey tattoo of a semi-automatic pistol, shown with its slide, grip and magazine detailed through smooth shading and fine highlights. A woven lace or mesh garter band wraps horizontally across the gun, with its own shading and pattern. The tattoo fills most of the frame on the outer upper thigh, against plain skin with a small mole visible below it.

Nobody in Kilchurn Glen asked what my aunt kept in the gatehouse drawer, because everybody knew. She had come up from Glasgow in 1962 with one suitcase, a heavy black pistol her husband left her, and a lace garter she claimed was pinched from a cousin's wedding. The pistol went into the drawer; the garter went round the grip so the cold metal wouldn't mark her palm when she carried it down the tower stairs.

The castle was half a ruin by then, roofless above the great hall, ivy holding the walls together where the mortar had given up. Sheep wandered the courtyard. Tourists photographed the gatehouse arch and never the windows. My aunt ran the honesty box and kept the peace with a voice that could stop a tractor at forty yards, and she never once raised a hand to anyone, though the whole village believed she could.

The summer the surveyor came to measure the tower, he wanted to know what the bulge in her apron pocket was. She looked at him over her glasses, then at the old lace band wound through the grip, and said, "Sketching tools, son. Mind your step on the newel."

He minded it after that, and the tower stood another forty years, long enough for me to inherit the drawer and the garter both.
