Pixel bicycle on the back of the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small bicycle outline is tattooed on the back of a neck, with the head and face out of frame. The design is built from square black pixels, giving the linework a blocky, digital look. The black ink sits centrally against pale skin above a purple top, with plenty of empty space around the motif.

The frost had the lane locked solid by six, so I walked the milk churns down to the road in my wellies while the sky was still the colour of wet slate. Dad's old bicycle leaned against the byre wall where it had been since the Christmas the sheep got loose. Its tyres had gone soft and grey, and a wasp nest had moved into the bell.

Ruth from the co-op had sent a printout in November, a grid of black squares she'd found in a box of her late husband's things. Every block was the same size, and every line stepped rather than curved, like a picture drawn by someone counting. "Your dad plotted his routes like this," she had written on the back. "Thought you'd want the shape of it."

I pinned the sheet to the feed-room door with a horseshoe nail and spent three evenings with a biro, filling in squares to match the frame. By the third night the bicycle had a crossbar, two wheels and a saddle no bigger than a fingernail. I rode it in my head every morning after that, down past the frozen trough and along the fence where the ice cracked under the churns.

The thaw came on a Tuesday. I wheeled the real bike out of the byre, pumped the tyres, and found the chain rusted fast to the sprocket. I left the churns for the lorry and walked the lane instead, counting the gravel one square at a time the way Dad used to. At the bottom of the hill the sun broke through, and every puddle held a small black outline of the road home.
