Pizza box and banners on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows an open pizza box with a slice of pepperoni pizza inside, a small flame at the side, and two ribbon banners across the top reading CAN'T STOP and WON'T STOP. The lettering is set in a black script and HOT-N-FRESH is written along the front of the box. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in orange, yellow, red and brown give it a classic colour look, set against bare skin with a tiled floor behind.

The box is still warm on the passenger seat when the dashboard clock turns to twenty to midnight, and the road past Tonopah has no lights at all, only the white dashes unspooling into the dark. You have forty-one minutes to get a large pepperoni to the Sagebrush Lodge. The ticket says room nine, paid in cash, with a note in biro that says keep the change, driver. Nobody out here has ever tipped you in handwriting before.

Past the junction for Route 6, a pickup sits on the shoulder with one headlight burning and its hazards blinking orange over the sand. A woman leans out and waves a twenty. Her boy is asleep in the cab, she says, and he hasn't eaten since Ely. She only wants a slice. You look at the clock, then at the twenty, then at the box, which is already open because you always check the toppings before a long run. You pass her a slice folded in a napkin. She doesn't ask for change.
Room nine's door is propped open with a boot when you arrive, a light on inside and the air-con rattling in the wall. A man in a dusty shirt sits on the bed with his phone face down beside him. He says he rang four times. He says he'd stopped believing in pizza. You set the box on the bedspread, and the cardboard still gives off that stubborn heat, and he laughs, short and surprised, the way people do when something arrives later than they expected but not too late.
On the way back the sky over the Sagebrush sign has gone the colour of the crust you saved for yourself. The road ahead is two hours of nothing with one light in it, and you keep the window down and the wheel steady, because the sticker on the lid said hot and fresh, and you have never once known how to pull over on a promise.
