The pizza van had never made it up the track to Hollin Castle before the rain started, but on Thursdays it came grinding through the ruts anyway, and Dilys Carew, who sold tickets from the hut by the gatehouse, would stand under her umbrella and watch it with the face of a woman who approved of nothing that had happened since 1648.

The customer was Aldous Pryce, a mason repointing the curtain wall for the trust. He ate his slice on the steps of the great hall, the wind stealing his napkin over the battlements, and on the fourth Thursday he took a cold chisel from his belt and cut a ribbon into the gatehouse lintel, letter by letter, while Dilys pretended not to watch. When she finally read it she said it was bleak. He said the first half was only the setting, and the second half was the point.
The following week the van did not come. Dilys found Aldous sitting on the steps with a box of cheese gone stiff in the drizzle, the drips frozen mid-fall like wax on a candle. He said a woman called Marta, who had run the bakery in Llanfair and once sold him a loaf for a penny less than the price on the sign, had gone to Cardiff without saying goodbye. He had written it all down in his notebook, he said, and then torn the page out because it sounded like a hymn.
Dilys sat beside him and took the last cold wedge from the box. It was dreadful. She ate the whole thing anyway. Afterwards she went to the lintel with her own chisel and, below his ribbon, she carved a small, careful crust, because someone had to finish the sentence properly.
