Two hands over a red circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two hands in black outline, one reaching up and one reaching in from below, with the fingers and wrists drawn in thin lines. Behind them sits a solid red filled circle, and the black linework is clean and even with no shading. The ink is black and red on a light background, and the tattoo is centred on the forearm in a close, straight-on photograph.

Mind the wasp by your ear, that's only the drunk one from the windfalls. Now hold the ladder steady, Tam, the top rungs go soft with the rain. Ada Penfold was up there that August, reaching for the last Bramley on the eastern wall, and her brother Edwin stood below with his hands cupped to catch whatever she dropped. That was their arrangement. He never caught a thing. He never had the knack.

The sun that month sat red over the back field every evening, low enough to lay its colour across the wet grass. Folk said it was the bonfires on the moor. Ada said it was only the sun, but she kept reaching through the branches as if she could lift it down like fruit. Edwin grew impatient. He climbed up to take the apple from her, and their hands met in the crook of the bough, one reaching up with the fruit and one reaching in from beneath, and neither let go for the length of a breath.
The apple split between them. Half went to the wasps and half went into the ground under the wall. When they dug for the core in spring, the roots had curled round the stone in a loop, the way a hand closes on a rail. Nobody ever cut that tree down. Edwin said it was his grip. Ada said it was hers. Both were right, which is why it fruits so late.
So when you pick there, you leave the last one on the bough for them. Go on, that's the one on the low limb, the red one with the sun behind it. Don't you dare take it, Tam. Put your hand here, underneath, and let it fall to you.
